The rich history of Daelhemergroeve
The underground location of a marlstone cave in the heart of southern Limburg is of course unique in itself. In the 17th and 18th century stonecutters were carving out the marlstone, resulting in the current network of underground corridors.
In 1917 the Caselli family realized a model coalmine within the quarry, where visitors were taken into the world of coal mining by former miners.
In the part of the quarry that was called the moss cave in the old days, an underground restaurant was established in 1978. In 1990 a large ballroom was added, with floor heating and other modern amenities. In 2010 the quarry’s new wedding hall was taken into use, giving Valkenburg the most unique wedding venue in the Netherlands.

The restaurant is now fully modernised and arranged as open-plan. That way the guests have a clear view of the cooking skills of our kitchen brigade and they can witness the preparation of their own dishes. Seasonal vegetables and local products star in the kitchen of our chef, with specific attention to ingredients that thrive well in caves.
